Nine kilometres for the Nine Australians who die by suicide every day
To mark ‘World Suicide Prevention Day’, on September 10, a group of 25 Edenhope locals walked a 9-kilometre course, acknowledging the 9 Australians who die from suicide every day.
The ‘Out of the Shadows’ walk was led by Grampians Health community health nurse Cath McDonald, who also collected about $300 in donations for Lifeline Australia.
“Suicide has touched our community many times but we shy away from the topic; we don’t talk about it enough,” Cath said.
“It was wonderful to see so many people come together and literally bring the topic out into the light.
“There were a lot of positives; not only did we raise awareness and money for suicide prevention, the physical activity was wonderful for our mental health and so was the social connection.”
Mother Nature delivered afternoon sun for participants, who completed a lap of Lake Wallace followed by a loop through town.
Cath, who was also representing local suicide prevention group Lifeforce Edenhope, highlighted the ongoing need to reduce stigma around mental health.
“We know that one in five Australians experience a mental illness each year, but only half of those will seek professional help,” she said.
“This public walk was a message to every person in our community, that there is no shame in mental health struggles and certainly no shame in reaching out for help.
“It was also a chance to remember and honour those we have lost to suicide, and to demonstrate our support for their loved ones.”
