Edenhope dementia support group formed
Grampians Health Edenhope is forming a support group for carers and loved ones of people with dementia.
Social worker June Spencer describes a group of people who are often isolated in their struggle to navigate a caring role that is often painful and complex.
Her support group hopes, not only to create a support network, but to provide relevant information about support services, regulations and legal advice.
“A lot of these people are already grieving the loss of their loved one, as they knew them, while also trying to deal with all the practical decisions and changes,” Ms Spencer said.
“There can also be tension within families, which is very difficult.”
Ms Spencer will gauge the needs of carers in the wider Edenhope community and secure guest speakers to assist.
“This group will be about the carers and what they want to get out of it, I’ll just be here to help problem-solve and source some help where I can,” she said.
“The by-product will be a network of people experiencing some of the same issues and hopefully a reduction in the stigma that can surround dementia.”
The first meeting of Edenhope’s Dementia Support Group, for carers and loved ones of people with dementia, will be held at the Elsie Bennett Community Centre on 21 March at 10.30am.
