The eight-strong team cycled from Mildura to Port Fairy last weekend, with the aim of raising money for Grampians Health Edenhope programs, equipment and services.
The average age of team members is nearly 60 and all but two knew what they were facing up to; Rob Kenna, 76, cycled in the very first event in 1987, and 2025 marked Dennis Sharkey’s 25th ride.
“We’ve all been calling on the community to donate for decades and Edenhope never fails us,” Chad Eastwood said.
“This is really the only fundraising project we’ve got for our hospital, day centre and aged care facility so we do feel pressure to make the most of it.
“I work in maintenance for Grampians Health Edenhope so I see the list of projects that won’t happen without fundraising dollars.”
Gold sponsors included Bull's Rustic Wood 'n' Frames and Photography, Bendigo Bank Edenhope and Sixt, which supplied the support bus.
"I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to the incredible team from Edenhope for their outstanding support to our hospital," said Claire Woods, Chief People Officer at Grampians Health.
"Your dedication and hard work have made a significant impact on our hospital, and we are deeply appreciative of your support. Thank you for making a difference in our community."
The team will now meet with campus manager Tricia McInnes, to determine where funds should be spent.
“Our staff members have compiled a wish-list for projects they’d like to implement or new equipment to improve service delivery,” Ms McInnes said.
“Through the Edenhope Murray to Moyne team, this community has been boosting localised care for a very long time.
“We’re immensely proud and grateful to this year’s team, along with the dozens that came before them.”
The event started with a bang on Saturday, when Trevor McClure’s tyre exploded during a pre-ride briefing. Thankfully, there were few other incidents and Mother Nature was kind.
Each team member rode more than 100kms on Day 1, from Mildura to Hamilton, where long-term supporters, Darcy and Chrissy Penrose, provided beds for the night.
Kevin Sharkey drove from Castlemaine, to ride alongside his brother Dennis and the Edenhope team. He also personally raised more than $700 for Grampians Health Edenhope.
“It’s a great cause, but it’s also good for my physical and mental health,” he said.
“Staying involved with the Edenhope team has kept me up and out there.
“There used to be a Castlemaine team and they’ve had a bit of a renaissance, just in support of my ride; they’ve trained with me every Wednesday morning since February.”
Kevin’s ‘Over 35s Castlemaine Masters’ football team donated $500 to the cause.
“They know it’s for Edenhope’s health service and they’re happy to support that,” he said.
Although there were a few cramps and groans, the veterans performed admirably and were out social riding again two days later.
Team members will continue to meet every Sunday morning for casual rides and have extended the invite to anyone interested.
“Newbies and novices are more than welcome,” Rob Kenna said.
“We go our for a ride and enjoy a coffee afterwards; it’s great fun.”
