This week, we are marking National Diabetes Week. As part of this, we spoke to Grampians Health Edenhope’s Diabetes Educator Tania Shepherd to know about the importance of diabetes management and self-care and the available services for individuals diagnosed with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
Tania offers support to community members who have been diagnosed with diabetes and plays a pivotal role in managing and preventing complications associated with the condition. She empowers individuals with diabetes to successfully manage their condition, enhancing their knowledge and improving their quality of life.
“Through personalised support and guidance, positive changes are celebrated, assisting to access specialist care and allied health professionals for comprehensive health outcomes,” said Tania.
Type 2 diabetes affects a significant portion of the population, and it is vital to understand the key risk factors associated with its development such as a family history of diabetes, age, being overweight, having high blood pressure, or experiencing conditions such as Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) or gestational diabetes during pregnancy.
“The relationship between lifestyle choices and the development of Type 2 diabetes cannot be understated. Adopting a nutritious diet and integrating regular physical activity into daily routines significantly contribute to managing blood glucose levels, weight, and cholesterol.”
"By limiting saturated fats, reducing salt intake, being mindful of added sugars, and making healthier choices, we can improve our overall health and wellbeing."
Dispelling common misconceptions and myths about diabetes is another focus of Tania’s work. "It's essential to recognise that diabetes comes in various types, such as Type 1, Type 2, and gestational diabetes,” she said.
“By promoting accurate information and education, we can foster a better understanding of the distinct nature of each type and dispel misconceptions that hinder effective management.”
For individuals at risk of developing diabetes or those recently diagnosed, Tania advises seeking guidance and support.
"It starts with a simple conversation, where we can provide information on available local resources and support". Proactive management of health and wellbeing begins with accessing the right information and resources.
By starting with a simple conversation, individuals can gain the support, guidance, and connections with specialists, allied health professionals, and necessary resources, including blood glucose monitoring devices.
Individuals seeking diabetes education and support can easily access the services at The Health & Wellbeing Hub by calling in at 65 Elizabeth Street or phoning 5585 9830.
During National Diabetes Week, let us remember that diabetes, in all its forms, is a chronic and serious condition that requires ongoing attention and care. By increasing awareness, promoting accurate information, and providing accessible resources, we can collectively improve the lives of those living with diabetes.
