Free Suicide Prevention training will empower community to have ‘tough conversations’
Staff, volunteers and community members are invited to a free suicide prevention workshop to learn key skills in identifying and responding to people at risk of suicide.
The session will run from 10am to 2.30pm, on December 9, at the Elsie Bennett Community Centre.
Attendees will gain confidence in communicating appropriately with a suicidal person, including raising the prospect of suicidal ideation.
In the event risk of suicide is confirmed, attendees will learn the appropriate action to take.
The life-saving conversations are designed to express support and create a safe space for important conversations, while also encouraging people to seek professional help.
“This is a wonderful opportunity to build a network of people in our community who feel comfortable having those tough conversations,” community health nurse Cath McDonald said.
“Whether you’re a healthcare professional, sporting coach, club leader or a stay-at-home parent, you have the power to make a profound difference in others’ lives.
“When we don’t know the right thing to say, we often say nothing at all; this training will help you speak up, intervene and potentially save lives.”
Wesley Lifeforce has developed the training workshop, which is based on the latest research in suicide prevention.
