Ian Quintrell’s interest in nursing was first piqued while working in Hotel Services at Grampians Health Edenhope.
"Starting in Hotel Services two years ago, I found I loved the residents and hearing their stories," he said. That was when he heard of an option of pursuing a traineeship, where he could both study and earn.
"I had already commenced a course in aged care Lifestyle and leisure and then heard I could do a traineeship through work."
To further bolster its nursing workforce, Grampians Health, in collaboration with Federation University TAFE expanded its Enrolled Nursing Traineeship to include Stawell, Edenhope and Horsham last year. The EN traineeship offers the opportunity to complete a Diploma of Nursing to become an Enrolled nurse while undertaking paid work at Grampians Health.
The program is designed to empower individuals who have always aspired to be nurses, or those seeking a career change but who cannot afford to pause their employment to pursue formal education. The program provides a unique blend of practical experience and classroom learning, making nursing education accessible.
A similar opportunity for personal care workers to complete a Cert III Individual support also exists and is currently being advertised at Grampians Health.
For Crystal Kelly, the EN traineeship was an opportunity to progress her career.
"I was already working at Lakeside Living as a Healthcare worker and heard about it through work and thought it was a great opportunity to further my career," she explained.
Being selected for the EN traineeship is a momentous occasion for both Ian and Crystal.
"It allows me to be hands-on with my learning on how to better care for the residents and wellbeing," said Ian. Meanwhile for Crystal, the EN traineeship is helping her pursue her goals while working close to home.
The program also goes beyond traditional classroom learning. The combination of classroom education at Federation TAFE and practical experience within Grampians Health's nursing workforce equips trainees to be work ready.
"It is a good opportunity; you are learning on the job, not just in a classroom," said Crystal.
The trainees highlighted the importance of understanding complex health conditions and how this knowledge can positively impact patient care. Crystal mentioned her interest in "understanding complex health conditions, why they have them, and how to help, especially when dealing with multiple conditions".
Grampians Health's EN Traineeship has a broader impact on patient care and healthcare services. Ian emphasised that "it gives the nurses more help by having trainees assisting them on the ground, especially with tasks like turning patients". This additional support enhances the quality of care provided to residents and patients of Grampians Health.
As Ian and Crystal embark on their respective journeys, they both have a clear message for those considering a career in nursing.
"If you have the slightest inkling to be a nurse, then go for it. There is a shortage of nurses at the moment, and it puts the current nurses under a lot of pressure," Ian said.
Crystal's advice was straightforward: "Have a go, definitely."
